Mary Casserley

My work revisits a classic era of Railway poster design, recreated in the vibrant tones of 1930’s travel art.
— Mary Casserley

Born and bred in Berkhamsted, Mary is both an artist and a writer. Having studied Fine Art at Portsmouth University, Mary’s style is heavily influenced by the pre-war style advertising travel posters for the Railways. Mary’s railway links shine through her artwork, with Mary having painted many locomotives through her career, a nod to her late grandfather, H.C. Casserley, the esteemed British railway photographer. Alongside the work of her grandfather, Mary’s work is influenced by the work of Norman Wilkinson, who she recently discovered was also an old boy of Berkhamsted School, where Mary worked in the art department for nearly 20 years!

Mary currently resides in Tring with her husband, son and dog Julian, and is taking commissions in and around the Chilterns, alongside her railway writing.

In my work, historic photographs, postcards, local knowledge, and rose-tinted spectacles are blended perfectly!
